Marriage Licenses

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. Before you get married there are a few things you need to know.

A marriage license must be obtained from the place of residence of either the bride or groom, not both. The fee is $30. Sorry, we cannot accept out-of-state checks.

You have to be 18 years old, unless the certificate contains written consent of the parents.

If either the bride or groom have been married before, a certified copy of the divorce decree with a raised seal is required. This must be obtained from the court that granted it.

Two witnesses are required by law, in addition to the person performing the ceremony.

In order to get married in Maine, you need a Maine Marriage License, which can not be used outside the State of Maine.

If neither the bride or groom are residents of Maine, they may file for a marrage licenses anywhere in Maine and get married anywhere in Maine.

Make sure the person performing the ceremony is legally qualified to perform a marriage in Maine. Following is a list of those qualified.

Ordained Minister
Clergyman
Licensed Preacher
Maine Bar Lawyer
Notary Public, commissioned and living in Maine

After the ceremony the person performing the marriage will complete the ceremony portion of the license and mail it directly back to the Town Clerk that issued it within 7 days. All corrections must be done through a legal process at the municipal clerk's office. To obtain a certified copy you must go to the Town Clerk who issued it. The Fee is $10 for the 1st copy and $5 for each additional copy issued at the same time.
