Getting Married in Maine
Marriage License

Congratulations on your upcoming marriage. Your marriage license is valid for 90 days and can be used anywhere in the State of Maine.

Both parties need to be present at the time of filling. The Marriage License must be signed in the Town Clerk's presence. If both parties reside in Maine, but in separate towns, the Marriage Intentions are filed in only one town, and you are free to marry anywhere in Maine.

If only one party resides in Maine, then both should apply in the town where the one holds residency.

If neither of you is a resident of the State of Maine, then you may apply in any town in Maine. It need not be the same town where you plan to be married, but it is recommended.

There is no longer a waiting period from the time you file and receive your Marriage License. The person performing tyour ceremony is responsible for filing the Marriage License with the Town Office that issued it within seven days. You may then apply for a Certified copy. The fee for a Certified copy is $15 for the first copy and $6 for each additional copy requested at the same time. The fee for a Marriage License is $40. If you wish to marry at the Lisbon Town Office, please call ahead. The fee to officiate a marriage at the Lisbon Town Office is $50.00.


Officiants

Marriage LicenseThe following individuals are authorized to perform marriages in Maine:

  • Justice or Judge
  • Lawyer admitted to the Maine Bar
  • Licensed Marriage Officiant (Maine Resident)
  • Temporary Registration Certificate (Non-resident)
  • Ordained Minister
  • Cleric engaged in the service of the religious body
  • Person licensed to preach by an association of ministers, religious seminary, or ecclesiastical body

Out-of-state Notaries and Justices of the Peace cannot officiate weddings in Maine. 


To obtain a marriage license you will need to know:

  • Marriage LicenseWe need to see an ID such as a driver's license or State ID.
  • Your mother's maiden surname (her birth name).
  • Your mother's and father's birthplaces.
  • If this is not the first marriage for one or both of you, you must bring with you a certified copy (with a raised seal) of the most recent divorce decree or a certified copy of a death certificate of the last spouse. This copy would have a judge's signature (not printed) and docket number.
  • Applicants must be 18 or older to marry. Applicants who are 17 years old must have their parents' consent. No one under 17 is allowed to get married in Maine.
  • The cost for a marriage license is $40. You may request a certified copy be sent directly to you once the wedding has taken place and the officiant has filed the license with the Clerk. Certified copies are $15 for the first copy, $6 for each additional copy.
